Thai Massage: What to Expect

Many people think of massage as a relaxing and soothing experience at a spa or resort. However, one form of massage, Thai massage, is a bit more of an interactive experience. If you are expecting to lie on a massage table and possibly fall asleep then this is not the massage for you. Here’s what you can expect from Thai massage.

Thai massage has some great therapeutic benefits. Many people find that it relieves headaches and back pain, increases flexibility and range of motion, and relieves stiffness and pain. But rather than lying on a massage table, you lie on a mat on the floor. And here comes the interactive part, you don’t just lie there. The Thai massage therapist will then manipulate your body in specific ways to improve flexibility.

Another difference is that you will not disrobe for a Thai massage. You will want to wear loose and comfortable clothing that makes it easy to move. The Thai massage practitioner will use various stretching, pulling, and rocking motions to help relieve tension in your muscles, promote relaxation, and improve flexibility and circulation.

Thai massage originated in India and is regarded as a healing art, incorporating influences from Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. The focus is to improve the flow of energy throughout the body. In a traditional massage, the therapist will use oil or lotion on the skin and use their hands or other instruments to knead the muscles. In Thai massage, the practitioner will use their hands, thumbs, elbows, forearms, and often the feet to reduce tension in the muscles.

If you are looking to relieve tension and are interested in a more active type of massage, Thai massage could be just what you are looking for. Talk to your practitioner today and try something new!
